Soulpepper and Buddies in Bad Times are seeking 2SLGBTQIA+ artists and performers 14-30 years old to participate in a virtual cabaret, "Queer Place, Queer Space” on Thursday, June 25 at 7pm. The cabaret explores how young artists define queer spaces, whether it be through body, mind, physical space or community around you. The definition of place has shifted over the last few months. The places that form our queer identity: theatres, cafes, workplaces, galleries, are no longer options for queer expression. While we are isolated, our identities are being constantly redefined by our new daily spaces: our homes, our walking trails, and Zoom performances with friends and strangers. We are looking for young people of all artistic backgrounds to explore what queer space, place, and community is to them right now.
We encourage artists of all experience levels, backgrounds, and identities to apply. Since Soulpepper’s inception, youth programming and outreach has been an essential part of our mandate, we continue this work virtually in hopes that we can give young 2SLGBTQIA+ artists a platform.
All applicants are asked to submit a video submission of their piece. Using the theme queer space, create or perform a piece, film it, and send it! You could perform a song (sung or instrumental), a monologue or poetry, dance or movement piece, or any other art form you can think of. The submission should be between 2-8 minutes in length. This video does not have to be polished or ready to present, just show us where you’re at! Please submit this as an unlisted YouTube link below. Deadline to apply: Sunday, June 7.
Performances will be pre-recorded. Each selected performer will receive an honorarium.
