Community Movie Night: Eileen

Eileen is a film adaptation of the debut novel by literary it girl Ottessa Moshfegh. The psychological thriller follows Eileen, a young secretary working at a boys’ correctional facility who becomes enchanted by Rebecca, the glamorous new psychologolist. As the two women grow closer, Eileen is inspired to explore new facets of her own personality and desires but her metamorphosis takes a sinister turn when Rebecca reveals a dark secret.

Eileen stars Anne Hathaway and Thomasin McKenzie and the screenplay was co-written by Ottessa Moshfegh.

STAGE CONNECTION

The film Eileen is screening in conjunction with The Welkin. Both stories, on screen and stage, center on women seeking agency and escape in repressive patriarchal societies.

On different continents and in different centuries, these women contend with violence and inhibited desires within the limited roles they are afforded in stifling communities and male-dominated legal systems. Questions about justice and morality are provoked in the fallouts from the arrival of a stranger who arouses a new way of viewing their circumstances.
