In celebration of Amanda Gormand's stirring performance and all the incredible poets that enrich our world as we head into FSpring. Feel free to link to a video, image, audio file, or put the text in the submission.
As a kid, I admired dearly the late Nelson Mandela. When Mandela was incarcerated on Robben Island, my great-uncle Ralph would drive their parish priest to the ferry on Sundays, so the priest could deliver communion to Nelson Mandela (Uncle Ralph was the organist at the church). It's one of my favourite stories, and I always felt inspired by the fact Nelson Mandela would recite Henley's poem "Invictus" to the other prisoners on Robben Island, and he took inspiration from the poem's message of self-mastery. It's been my favourite poem all my life. The linked audio is myself reciting the poem. Enjoy.
For music lovers, I think you'll recognize yourself; for poetry lovers, well, you probably already know this one.
It was a celebratory night already in NYC, and then Ins got up on stage and performed this piece, dedicated to Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park, and we all knew we had witnessed something special. He's an incredible artist and beautiful soul. It is not in his book of poetry, 'Subway Stations of the Cross', but so many other incredible poems are.
PRUFROCK was the first poem I had to read at University. I remember hearing a recording of T. S. Eliot reciting it on the library computer. Every time I read it it takes on new meaning and new wonder. It's had a special place in my life ever since.
My Dad knew this poem from his teens, and re discovered it recently when a friend gifted him a book of Brian Patten's poetry. He shared it with me, since he thought I'd love its message about the value of the imagination.
In the dark times
Will there also be singing?
Yes, there will also be singing
About the dark times.
What makes your heart grow three sizes this season?
Could be a special song, movie, photo, tradition, or recipe...
Rick Martinez is a chef and author living in Mazatlán, México. Every day he posts a photo of a different flower with the words ¡Buenos días! followed by some photos he's taken during his day to his Instagram story. It's a great, vicarious vitamin D boost interspersed with some mouthwatering tacos and aguachile.
I'm half South African (mum and her family hail from beautiful Cape Town). A holiday staple growing up were my Aunty Pauline's Cape Malay style koesisters - a sweet and spicy South African donut sprinkled with hot syrup and coconut flakes. The recipe eluded me for years until I taught myself to make koesisters during the pandemic - I like to brag I've perfected the art, and my South African family would be proud. The linked recipe is a good one if you want to try, though I have my own variations (and I really must write them down sometime).
Newfoundland Brown Bread makes my heart (and hips) grow 3 sizes! Totally worth it for this yummy, molasses treat. My mom and grandma always made plenty of loaves to share and it's a tradition of ours to bake in the winter and drop off at our neighbours doorsteps. . I'm lucky to have the time this year to really practice baking this bread, perfecting the recipe, and carrying on the tradition. While I won't be able to sit down and have a slice over tea with them this year, the smell of brown bread baking in my kitchen makes me feel that much closer to home.
We all need a good laugh (at ourselves) in this season. Who can relate?!
This work by activist poet Martín Espada was recently shared with me, and feels like it was written for this year. It is a call for change, but also a call for imagination.
What SONG Gets You Up and Dancing EVERY TIME?
If I have music playing, there is a 99.99% chance it is Harry Styles and/or One Direction. I can't even pretend to be ashamed of how much 1D I listen to, because of just how often it accompanies my daily life... I wouldn't necessarily call this their best work, but is the ~original~, my karaoke song, and it lights up my life like nothing else.
It's been my go to pump up song since it came out in 2014 and never fails to get everyone on their feet!
I used to sing in a classic dad rock band in highschool. This was my favourite jam to rock out too!
Oh my goodness, this song makes me dance every time I hear it! The funky beat, awesome vocals, and spectacular lyrics are just sensational to my ears and it’s a great song to enjoy yourself. The song always takes me on a journey to another world full of imagination, joy, and wonder... 💫
I've got little kids, and when Shakira's song from Zootopia comes on a big smile comes over all of our faces and wherever we are (mostly at home these days), we can't help shaking our tail-feathers.
Now, more than ever... I WANNA DANCE WITH SOMEBODY!
Sammy's tied with Dean Martin as my favourite entertainer of yesteryear. I've always loved his version of "For Once In My Life"...especially his energy in this performance in Germany! Pure fun!
I love this song because really makes me feel happy as dance like crazy on it with my family. so I would love to share this good vibe with you to feel happy together during this craziness.
My older brother and I used to have "Modern Love" on heavy rotation in our house growing up. As soon as I hear that iconic guitar and drum opening-it puts me in the mood to move!
Lizzo before everyone knew who Lizzo was- this is the first song I heard of hers. Loved it ever since.
I used to dance to this song every time it came on the radio when I was a kid. It wasn't until I was older that I realized it was also a tribute to loved ones we've lost. Still gets me dancing every time I hear it! And that key change!!
I had the absolute pleasure of getting to perform live this summer across Toronto lawns, driveways and porches with Musical Stage Company's 'Porchside Songs' - little 40 minute mini-concerts. My friend Beau Dixon and I teamed up and presented a bunch of songs. When we were compiling our setlist I suggested Lovely Day by Bill Withers, and I'm so glad I did. Nobody sings it like Bill, but does it ever put a smile on your face to jam on this one, no matter what nonsense is happening that day. Audiences loved it and so did we. The simple melody, the long held notes that seem borderline impossible - it's magic and its mellow and it gets me dancing like a fool every time without fail!
It was hard to choose just one song for this as I have A FEW that can get me dancing. I chose this one today. I love it because it's 3:43 of the coolest energy. It forces you to commit to pumping up the jam. It's literally in the lyrics! I take that job seriously.
My morning soundtrack is pretty eclectic, and gets played very loud. This is the track that got me and the cats dancing this morning. Total 80s throwback.....
When my son was young we'd rock out to this. Now he's a teenager who prefers rap but this still gets us jumping every time.
This one is on regular (daily) rotation for us...and it gets Lola (my three year old) dancing every time!
The secret to doing dishes: comfortable footwear and Ring by Sylvan Esso. Try it!
An anthem. Who can resist singing along? And dancing too.
The melody the memories and the joy it inspires irrespective of generation.
